Russell Westbrook ‘You, the real MVP’
Witnessing History-Making:
Russell Westbrook continues to streak towards unheralded territory having recorded his 38th triple-double of the season. From the second the 2016-17 NBA season tipped off Russell Westbrook has been on a terror. In all transparency, I have a vested interest in Westbrook accomplishing this goal since my preseason prediction was for him to average a triple-double and win MVP.
As fans and analysts, it’s difficult to separate ourselves from the rare territory Westbrook is in. And, for every naysayer who belittles Westbrook’s accomplishment perhaps you can answer this question for me: If it isn’t a big deal why hasn’t it happened since 1962 and why isn’t anyone else challenging Westbrook this season with a similar effort?
Although Westbrook’s focus is winning and capturing the highest seed possible, the remainder of the NBA universe remains transfixed on his historic season.

Oscar Robertson set the benchmark as the only NBA player to average a triple-double in the regular season in 1961-62. Robertson further holds the record for most triple-doubles in a campaign with 41.
At this point, it appears inevitable Westbrook will match the first record and has good odds to surpass the second. The game vs San Antonio tonight marks the 75th of the season giving Westbrook eight more opportunities to march into history. Examination of those games points to a strong possibility of Westbrook claiming both records this season.
