Thunder in the news: Andre Roberson is here for a steal
By Tony Heim
Thunder in the news is an OKC Thunder fans best friend; a quick five minute break highlighting the top content around the web.
Another day, another signing for Oklahoma City. This time it came in the form of re-signing Andre Roberson: three years, 30 million. Glorious. Let’s see what the people have to say.
The salary cap situation, explained
Fred Katz from the Norman Transcript did a great job instantly explaining the cap ramifications for the Roberson re-signing. The Thunder are now in the luxury tax, but Fred drops a very interesting tidbit at the end. I won’t spoil it so take a break from this and click that link.
"Sources previously told The Transcript that Roberson turned down a four-year, $48 million extension offer back in the fall. And though he’s missing out on that deal by only $2 million a year in average annual value, he’s still accepting a dip from his original hopes. Wojnarowski noted that Roberson preferred a three-year deal to a four-year one this time around. Roberson’s value dropping was in line with the summer’s shrinking market for restricted free agents. Without nearly as much total cap space around the NBA this summer as there was in 2016, room was closing. And Roberson jumped at an opportunity to return to a situation in which he was already happy."
Enes Kanter, Summer League and more
Thunder beat writers are on fire my friends. Erik Horne from The Oklahoman details a few really important tidbits for OKC fans. 1) How the market has highlighted Enes Kanter’s value. 2) Josh Huestis’ and Semaj Christon’s time at Summer League. 3) It’s finally time to get these contracts signed. I’d click that link as well.
"The NBA is trending small at the expense of the traditional big man. It’s not that Kanter isn’t effective. He was one of the most efficient offensive threats in the NBA last season, averaging 24.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per 36 minutes. But teams aren’t in a hurry to spend on bigs this offseason. Free agency has been primarily about the perimeter players. Teams also have less money to spend than last offseason’s $24.1 million salary cap spike which saw the cap rise from $70 million to $94.1 million. The cap has only jumped to $99 million this summer."
Thunderous Intentions’ turn
Today we highlight Josh Lea. It turns out the very day he writes a fantastic piece about Andre Roberson, Roberson re-signs. It’s destiny. You’ve already checked out the first two links (at least I hope), make it 3/3. Do it for me 🙂
"Roberson still made himself useful in the Thunder offense through a series of backdoor cuts and scoring at the rim. While his three-point shooting needs work, he did shoot 46% from the floor. Roberson also stepped up during the playoffs against the Houston Rockets, scoring 18 points on 7-10 shooting in Game One. Roberson was also charged with the task of defending James Harden. A task he performed quite well despite the outcome of that series."
