Welcome to OKC Thunder – In the news for Friday, July 7 featuring topical daily news on your favorite team and the NBA.

With Sam Presti continuing his major wheeling and dealing the OKC Thunder already look to be a significantly stronger team.  The steal to nab Paul George was the shocker that kick started free agency with a bang. Adding the under rated free agent Patrick Patterson for a song was coup. Then on the day the moratorium lifted and contract could be formalized Presti nailed down Andre Roberson for much less than their original offer last fall. All in all it was one heck of a week for Sam Presti and the OKC Thunder.

Now interest and some nervous parties shift their attention to Russell Westbrook and how soon (or if) he’ll sign the Designated Player Extension.

No news on Westbrook extension not necessarily bad thing:

"But with Westbrook’s case, quiet shouldn’t equal panic….. He’s a different dude. No kidding, right? But in cases such as this where lots of superstars let their business be known, Westbrook is extremely private. He has a small circle of family and friends who aren’t leaking, and as much attention as he draws — even seeks — on the court, it’s the exact opposite with contracts and negotiations and money and such.Copy"

Westbrook’s New Samsung Commercial:

The new MVP has sponsors clamoring to add him to their product lines and for good reason. Looking back upon the season his accomplishments are undeniable. It’s likely fifty years from now what everyone will remember about the 2016-17 was Westbrook’s triple-double season.

But, perhaps what is more appealing about the OKC Thunder guard is his character.  Prior to winning the MVP award few fans (or media for that matter) had been exposed to the heart of Westbrook. Everyone knew he was a competitor, but his humble, genuine speech was a new insight on the man who is extremely loyal to all in his life. Recalling the speech the way he spoke of his family including his parents, brother and wife left nary a dry eye in the house.

Samsung smartly capitalized on Westbrook’s loyalty as they have him drive through his L.A. neighborhood. Further, they incorporate his ‘Why Not’ motto and charity.

I’ve often said Westbrook is probably the most misunderstood player in the NBA, so it’s wonderful the world is finally seeing him in this light.

Andre Roberson Deal Grade A

Thunderous Intentions scribe Austin Sternlict provided the initial report and grade on the re-signing of Andre Roberson. Several fans were worried the Patrick Patterson signing might make this move less of a certainty, but Presti continues to have arguably his most successful offseason ever.

"Grade: AThis is another excellent signing considering how dangerous restricted free agency can be. Even if Roberson can’t improve on offense, his defense will be more than worth his new deal. Plus, Roberson’s offense will be lest exploited with the additions of Paul George and Patrick Patterson. This signing looks great now, and could look even better a year or two from now."

More from Thunderous Intentions

Granted, Presti still has unfinished business. Particularly adding a backup point guard. This becomes even more relevant given how poorly Semaj Christon played in Orlando.  Then again, after the week the OKC Thunder magician just delivered don’t count out the possibility he’ll pull off another move to shed some assets and bring in a veteran PG.

Notably here’s several candidates Presti may (or should) be considering:

5 X-Factor free agents OKC Thunder should target

5 free agents who address OKC Thunder perimeter scoring

OKC Thunder free agents point guard short list

Also the Las Vegas Summer League starts today with 24 teams participating. Although the OKC Thunder won’t be participating the brain trust will be actively watching games looking for a potential backup point guard.

That wraps up OKC Thunder In the News for July 7. Check back with TI tomorrow  and we’ll have your most up to date news and more offseason updates.
