Today was Russell Westbrook’s 29th birthday. He seemingly spent the first half thinking about cake instead of playing basketball, shooting just 2-10 from the floor. In true Brodie fashion, he needed to switch his shoes at halftime to get in a groove. The point guard bounced back with a great 3rd quarter en route to a 27-point performance.
Truthfully, tonight’s game featured a pretty lack-luster performance from Roberson. He played his normal solid defense but failed to make any notable plays that stood out. Free throw shooting remains a constant concern for him, as he finished the night 1-4 from the line.
This weekend’s stretch of games have seemed to do wonders for Paul George’s confidence. He was sensational once again this evening, pouring in a OKC Thunder leading 37 points on 12-22 shooting. Billy Donovan’s decision to play PG with the bench unit more often has been a smart one. The playmaking and smooth scoring he provides helps that unit immensely.
Tonight marked the first start of the young season for the Syracuse product. In 34 minutes, he added to what has already been a strong season with 10 points and 8 rebounds. His ability to defend multiple positions and score timely buckets are extremely important for this OKC Thunder team.
After playing well in his season debut on Friday night, Dakari Johnson was a little quiet against the Dallas Mavericks. The young big-man ended the evening with 5 points and 3 rebounds but was plagued by foul trouble once again. Johnson has promise and shows great effort – that’s all we can ask from him at this point in the season.
