Bradley Beal:

Washington recognizes Beal is in the upper echelon of superstars. Obviously, Washington could try to emulate what Sam Presti did with Paul George but that situation is so unique (he requested the trade) and the timing was also critical to the haul the OKC Thunder GM negotiated. Electing to take that route would also require the Wizards to take a risk they could draft another player of Beal’s ilk and would still have Wall’s massive contract on the books.

Without his backcourt partner in b-ball crime, Beal took over the leadership reigns and excelled in the role. He averaged 25.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.7 blocks (all career highs) last season. At 26 he is just entering his prime and beyond his production, the steps he took in Wall’s absence last season showcased his leadership skills.

Making lemonade out of lemons:

In truth, there aren’t a lot of obvious strengths given the state of the roster, salary, and lack of assets. That said, there is a glimmer of hope if reclamation project Isaiah Thomas can rediscover a season similar to 2016-17.

Plus Davis Bertans will be a highly coveted trade deadline asset given his perimeter prowess as a big.

Sheppard will need to assess whether he takes advantage of those opportunities to trade for picks and assets or lure the players to remain in Washington as part of their revamping.
