OKC Thunder: 3 head coach candidates from the Popovich tree
Becky Hammon – six years on Spurs bench – 16 years as a player
Of the three Spurs assistants, the one with the most experience is Becky Hammon. Her combination of playing and coaching puts her ahead of both Duncan and Hardy.
Unlike Timmy, she had to fight for everything she got in her playing career. She went undrafted despite a stellar career at Colorado State. Still, she managed to impress landing on the New York Liberty first as a backup point guard and eventually as the starter.
‘Big Shot Becky’ was named one of the WNBA top 15 players and yet she was shunned when it came time to assemble the 2008 American Olympic squad. Undeterred, Hammon became a dual citizen adding Russia to her American citizenship. This task was made easier because she played for the CSKA Moscow team in the WNBA offseason. It allowed her to suit up for the Russian National team and get to experience the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

In addition, the South Dakota native understands the rigors of coming back after suffering a serious injury. In the 2003 WNBA season, she tore her ACL in 2003.
All of these situations make Hammon uniquely suited to relate to the entire roster. As a player, she became a star and a leader. Yet, she also understands the trials many players face to gain recognition or having to work to become a core contributor on the team.
Likewise, as a former point guard, she understands the intricacies of the game. Factor in six seasons sitting beside the master Popovich soaking in his brilliance.

Ultimately, any of this trio from the Popovich coaching tree would be a great get. My preference would be Hammon because she’s the best suited to lead a youthful rebuilding team and also excel when the Thunder is ready to get back in the race to win the NBA title.
