Reason 2: Need to tank to retain the OKC Thunder pick

A quick scan of Real GM offers draft pick details by every team. The longest section of the page belongs to the OKC Thunder with 27 entries for incoming picks. On the right side are two entries representing outgoing picks.

One is the Thunder 2022 first-round draft pick that is owed to the Atlanta Hawks – – but only if the team finishes outside the lottery. That should be more than enough inspiration for Mark Daigneault and his team to invest once more in the tank in 2022.

The jokes flow about Sam Presti having so many draft picks he’ll be making all the picks soon.  The truth is, it would be a waste to finish 15th in 2022 and lose a potential top prospect.

If the team is going to tank — then invest in doing so from season start. Sure, luck plays a role as this draft lottery demonstrated.  Therefore why not control the things you can — and retaining our own pick is at the top of that list.
