The OKC Thunder are gearing up for game two of the Salt Lake City Summer League, and following last week's opener, excitement is undoubtedly high when it comes to the prospect of watching some of the club's young ballers.
From rookie Brooks Barnhizer to the recently signed sophomore Ajay Mitchell, Oklahoma City's roster is chock full of talents who have already proven capable of captivating an audience with their stellar on-court production.
Sadly, however, first-round pick Thomas Sorber is not slated to participate in Monday's bout against the Philadelphia 76ers. In fact, according to GM Sam Presti, the big man isn't expected to play one lick of in-game action between now and at least the preseason.
Thomas Sorber to be sidelined for all of Thunder Summer League games
Per the storied executive, Sorber "is still in the return-to-performance phase" as he continues his rehabilitation from a left foot surgery he underwent back in late February.
While an injury should never be viewed as a positive, in an odd sense, the big man's season-ending ailment during his rookie campaign at Georgetown actually proved beneficial for both the Thunder and perhaps even for him.
Once believed to be a lottery guarantee, instead of heading to a cellar-dwelling franchise, the high-upside Sorber slipped to 15 overall, where the defending champions were able to scoop him up.
Even without seeing him suit up in roughly five full months, many believe the Thunder added a perfect player in the 2025 NBA Draft, with some arguing him to be the steal pick from his respective class.
Easily the best rim-protector and one of the best defenders at the collegiate level last season, Sorber wrapped up his one-and-done season with the Hoyas boasting Third-Team All-Big East honors and impressive averages of 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.7 offensive boards, 2.4 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game.
The 6-foot-10, 250-pound big also led all of Division One in on-off defensive rating last year at 26.5.
Believed to be the future of the pivot position next to Chet Holmgren out in Oklahoma City, fans and pundits are champing at the bit, waiting to catch their first glimpse of Thomas Sorber's skills gracing the hardwood in the Thunder's blue, orange, and yellow threads.
Sadly, such a viewing isn't expected to come at any time soon, though, considering the hype that's surrounding the 19-year-old, the hope is that he'll be more than worth the wait.
