Cons of hiring Monty Williams:

The biggest knock on Williams as a coaching candidate is how dependent his offenses were on isolation. The Pelicans ranked second in 2014-15 in terms of iso possessions.

His final Pelicans squad also made the third fewest passes per game in the same season. Sound familiar? That is largely what we scream about Billy Donovan for, which is why Williams was a prime candidate for Donovan’s staff.

However, Williams did have a lot of off ball movement and screens which is not common in Oklahoma City as most “sets” Billy Donovan barks out consist of a lot of ball watching.

Final Thought:

Ultimately I do not see Williams being a fit in Loud City due to not only him being too much like Donovan, but also how far along in the process he is when it comes to his choice between the Suns and Lakers.

Had OKC fired Donovan right out of the gates this offseason, maybe they would have been in the running for Williams. OKC Thunder GM Sam Presti said, “If anything changes [In regard to Donovan’s job status] I’ll let you [the media] know.”

That is not exactly a firm endorsement of his head coach. Especially considering the context that he still needs to meet with Donovan to discuss how the season went.

No matter if Donovan is fired or not, it does not seem like Williams is the guy. Sorry, Kendrick Perkins.
