Josh Giddey had an unfortunate ankle injury in his first Summer League appearance last season and a hip injury that held him out of games for the remainder of the season past February last season.

When talking to Aaron Wiggins and Mike Muscala, both players reiterated that the Thunder organization was all about getting reps in wherever they could. Giddey was limited in those reps with injuries last season, which helped lead him to play in this year’s Summer League with Chet Holmgren and company.

Josh Giddey is providing incredibly important leadership for the Oklahoma City Thunder

Giddey’s presence on the Summer League team has been pleasant for both the players and the fans. Holmgren, Wiggins, and Jalen Williams have all seen firsthand how Giddey will find them on cuts, getting them in the right spot for easy buckets.

It’s been a pleasure to watch Giddey in the Summer League, and one trait that has been underrated so far is his leadership.

His leadership has been shown in both his action and what he’s said. The Thunder staffers should be confident in Giddey’s ability and with what they’ve seen in the Summer League.

He’s played more than expected and he mentioned wanting to play as much as possible and build chemistry with his teammates. He has taken every opportunity he’s had to do that. He was eventually shut down but was able to play five games total.

Giddey has explained that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the head of the Thunder, which is comforting for Thunder fans to hear while the national media continues to create a false narrative of the two not being able to coexist.

Chet Holmgren has made it clear that Giddey is trying to boost the chemistry with the new guys heading into next season. His impact has been made this offseason, and there’s no doubt that it will help set the tone heading into next season.

The team will be more fun to watch when every player is on board. With Giddey and the help of others like Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder will easily be able to have a tight-knit group.

As a point guard whose primary skill is playmaking, it only makes sense that Giddey has been a good off-court leader too.

For Thunder fans, Giddey’s leadership should provide a level of comfort as not every star has the leadership or gives the amount of effort on their squad to help the team come together in the offseason. It seems as if Giddey loves OKC and wants to help create the best program possible, no matter the circumstances.
